Cable TV Recorder Guide: Record Live TV on PC, Smart TV, or DVR [4 Ways]

Looking for a cable TV recorder? Explore 4 proven ways to record live TV, including DVRs, Smart TVs, capture cards, and PC recording software.

There are several ways to record Cable TV, from traditional DVRs to PC screen recorders and cloud DVR services. Explore the methods below and choose the one that best fits your needs.

Method 1. Record Cable TV with a DVR

Using a DVR (Digital Video Recorder) is the easiest and most reliable way to record Cable TV. It allows you to save live TV shows, movies, and sports events and watch them later at your convenience.

What You Need

  • Cable TV subscription
  • DVR-enabled cable box
  • TV

Steps to Record Cable TV with DVR

  1. Connect your DVR cable box to the TV and make sure both devices are powered on.
  2. Press the Guide button on your cable remote to open the TV schedule, then scroll to find the program you want to record.
  3. Press the red Record (REC) on your remote. For a TV series, select Record Series (or press the Record button a second time) to automatically save future episodes.
  4. Access your recordings from the DVR library and watch them anytime.

Method 2. Record Cable TV on a Smart TV Using USB

A Smart TV with PVR support can record live TV directly to a USB drive or external hard drive, without needing a separate DVR.

What You Need

  • Smart TV with PVR support
  • USB flash drive or external HDD

Steps to Record Cable TV on a Smart TV

  1. Connect a USB drive or external hard drive to your Smart TV.
  2. Format the drive if prompted to enable TV recording. (Warning: This will erase any existing data on the USB)
  3. Press the Record (REC) button to record live TV, or schedule a recording through the TV Guide.
  4. Open the TV's recordings or media library to watch your saved programs.

Note: This method works best for free over-the-air (antenna) channels and unencrypted cable signals. Most encrypted cable boxes prevent direct USB recording due to copyright protection (HDCP).

Method 3. Record Cable TV on PCs with a Cable TV Recorder

If you're watching Cable TV through a cable box, a capture card allows you to transfer the TV signal to your PC. Combined with professional screen recording software like iTop Screen Recorder, you can easily record live TV programs, movies, and sports events in high quality.

What You Need

  • A Windows PC or laptop
  • A cable box with HDMI output
  • An HDMI capture card (USB or PCIe)
  • An HDMI cable
  • iTop Screen Recorder

  2. Launch the capture card's software (or another compatible program, such as VLC) and verify that the live Cable TV feed appears on your computer screen.
  3. Download, install, and open iTop Screen Recorder. Select Full Screen or customize the recording area to capture the TV feed.

Method 4. Record Cable TV Using Cloud DVR Services

If you prefer a hassle-free option, cloud DVR services allow you to record and store live TV programs in the cloud. You can access your recordings via TV, computer, or mobile device, though please note that storage capacity and recording features may vary depending on your subscription plan.

What You Need

  • A subscription to a live TV streaming service
  • A compatible device (PC, Smart TV, smartphone, or tablet)

Steps to Record Cable TV via Cloud DVR Services

  1. Open your live TV streaming service, such as YouTube TV, Hulu + Live TV, Sling TV, or Fubo, on your preferred device.
  2. Find the program, movie, or sporting event you want to record.
  3. Select the recording option (such as Record, Add to Library, or Add to My Stuff). The service will automatically save the content to your cloud DVR storage.
  4. Open the Library, DVR, or My Stuff section to access and watch your recordings anytime.
